The SATW wants to offer young people a springboard into the world of technology

Advisory Board Member: Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences SATW

Interview with Esther Koller-Meier Secretary General

My wish goes out to parents and teachers. Give young people the chance to discover the fascinating world of technology. Our everyday lives are characterised by technology. That's why it's important that young people take an interest in it. Positive key experiences can have a lasting influence on future career choices.

When and in what context did you first hear about Engineers' Day?

The SATW has been a member of the advisory board for several years. Since then, we have been committed to Engineers' Day and its goals and concerns. We are very happy to do this, especially because it enables us to make a contribution to combating the shortage of skilled labour. This is a matter close to the SATW's heart. The Academy has been involved in promoting young STEM talent in a variety of ways for over 15 years.

Your company is now taking part in Engineers' Day as a donor for the 4th time. Why are you involved in this event?

The mission of Engineers' Day coincides with that of the SATW. It therefore goes without saying that we are involved in Engineers' Day together with our other valued, long-standing partners.

Which goal or goals would you emphasise as the most important priority of your involvement in Engineers' Day or in everyday life in relation to sustainability?

Promoting young talent is undoubtedly a central task of the SATW and this goal is very important to us. It is crucial to understand that we can achieve this goal most effectively if we also keep the other goals in mind, such as making the outstanding achievements of engineers visible and promoting dialogue with the public. If society recognises the outstanding work and commitment of engineers in the field of sustainability, this will have a direct impact on young people interested in technical careers.

Why do you think engineers and their achievements are not recognised enough in everyday life and what can engineers do about it?

Engineers tend to do their work in the background. They focus more on realising their projects than on communicating their successes or achievements. Engineers should increasingly explain their projects to the public in an understandable language and emphasise their social relevance.

If you had one wish to influence the promotion of young talent even more, who would it be and what would it be?

My wish would be for parents and teachers. Give young people the chance to discover the fascinating world of technology. Our everyday lives are characterised by technology. That's why it's important that young people take an interest in it. Positive key experiences can have a lasting influence on future career choices.

Do you have another wish in connection with Engineers' Day?

I hope that we can gain even more visibility for Engineers' Day and for the engineering profession. Engineers make a significant contribution to overcoming the challenges of the future.

Which future challenge(s) do you see as the most important, and for which will we urgently need more engineers?

For me, climate change, energy supply and efficiency and health are the priority challenges that we have to face. Engineers play a key role in overcoming these challenges. We need new impetus for innovative solutions.
